Learn to Sign with Koko

In this section you can learn some of Koko's favorite signs, which are essentially a subset of ASL (American Sign Language) with some minor changes introduced by Koko for convenience and/or to adapt to the hand structure of a gorilla (their thumbs are relatively smaller than ours in comparison to our index fingers). Each of the following signs includes a video of Dr. Penny Patterson and a research assistant demonstrating the sign both in standard ASL, and Koko's modified form (when different). We are currently working on a new "Koko App" which will make these signs and more accessible, from your mobile devices, and feature more of Koko herself demonstrating the signs. Sign up for our KokoMail eNewsletter. to be notified when the App is ready.
