  Michael was a wonderful male silverback gorilla who lived with Koko from age 3, until he passed away in the year 2000 at age 27. Always bright and curious, Michael learned over 20 signs during his first year of training and eventually developed a vocabulary of more than 600 signs. He and Koko are the only two "talking" gorillas in the world (although Ndume has recently learned a few signs simply by being exposed to it).
