Gabon Rainforest gets new lease on life

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has decided that the Leroy-Gabon logging operations do not deserve to be certified and that the certification "should be withdrawn immediately." In addition, the FSC has taken a number of steps to keep this from happening anywhere else and to ensure that the certification company working in Africa cannot make similar mistakes again.

The FSC has put a 6-month moratorium "on all new certificates for forest management operations that involve timber harvesting in primary [old growth] forests."

Please send a letter of congratulations to the FSC on the decision not to give what might be viewed as a stamp of approval to a logging operation that is unsustainable, and that presents such a great threat to gorillas:

Visit the Rainforest Action Network's web site, and read their Action Alert 131, which contains a detailed account of the successful campaign to withdraw certification of the Leroy-Gabon logging operation. You may also send an email message from the RAN site, congratulating the FSC on their decision to withdraw this certification.
