The Education of Koko is the first book on the most far-reaching ape language experiment yet conducted, the only one with a gorilla. It chronicles Dr. Penny Patterson's first nine years as Koko's dedicated teacher and surrogate mother. Koko's education gives us a beguiling glimpse into the mind of perhaps our closest relative —an animal long vilified and misunderstood, who now teaches us about the origins of abilities we had thought to be exclusively human. In so doing, The Education of Koko sheds important new light on the nature of the human beast.

Though out-of-print, we are pleased to make the first 3 chapters of this critically acclaimed book available for free (just follow the links), and the entire book available as a PDF file to all Gorilla Foundation members. Just click here to get the entire book.
