Dear Friend,
Watching Koko at age two reminds me of her curiosity and playfulness. In this weekโs video (see above) she pauses to observe a wildebeest that is also watching her, then runs across the grass and leaps from a cinder block.
These moments were more than play. They were how she built confidence and began to understand the world around her.
For young gorillas, movement, observation, and exploration are essential parts of growth, just as they are for human children.
Seeing Kokoโs early development reminds us of the intelligence and sensitivity gorillas share with us, and of our responsibility to ensure that they have the chance to live, learn, and thrive.
To do that, they need plenty of space and freedom!
