Dear Friend,

Because Michael’s exact birthday is unknown, we at The Gorilla Foundation celebrate his life each year on March 17.

In this week’s video, I reflect on Michael’s arrival to come live with Koko and share a few moments that capture something essential about who he was.

As a young gorilla, Michael could be playful, strong-willed, and very clear about what he wanted.

In one memorable clip, he signs “Chase Mike” to Ron, showing that he was not simply responding to others, but actively initiating the game himself.

You can also see Michael with Koko and with his caregivers in his younger years, along with later footage of him as an adult. Together, these moments remind me of how purposeful his communication was, filled with curiosity, strength, and distinct personality.

As we celebrate Michael this week, we remember him with love and gratitude — and he reminds us of our purpose to extend that love to all gorillas.
