Dear Friend,
One evening at bedtime, Koko and I looked through Dr. Seussโs The Foot Book, a picture book built around opposites such as big and small, wet and dry, and left and right, all presented through a parade of feet.
Koko turned the pages herself as we went. Partway through, she did something that made me laugh: she put her own foot right down on the book, as if she wanted to join the lesson instead of just watching it.
It is easy to see an interaction like this as simply playful. But Kokoโs attention to the book, her independent page-turning, and her spontaneous response to its subject also show how actively she engaged with the objects and activities around her.
Koko is not the only gorilla with this capacity. Thousands of gorillas, in the wild and in human care, still need our help.
