In the above video, Koko visits the scenic Djerassi Ranch in the Santa Cruz Mountains with me, Dale Djerassi, and others.
Dale’s family helped me transition Koko from the San Francisco Zoo to the newly founded Gorilla Foundation. His father, Carl Djerassi (a famous scientist) gives Koko a piggyback ride as he walks alongside me. Koko then climbs into a tree and takes in her surroundings.
The camera pans across sweeping views toward the ocean, and a picnic is prepared for later in the day.
These quiet early moments reflect the foundational support and shared vision that helped make Koko’s life and learning journey possible.
They also led to the Foundation building a permanent home for Koko, Michael and Ndume, just down the road from the Djerassi Ranch.
