Dear Friend,

Koko was not only famous for her sign language and paintings—she also had a musical side.

In this playful moment (see above video) she explores a toy keyboard, pressing different colored keys as she experiments with sound. Just as she used sign language and art to express herself, music became another way for Koko to engage with the world.

She even invites Penny to join in, showing how much she enjoys shared experiences. As the impromptu performance wraps up, it’s only fitting to give a round of applause for the pianist!

We continue to learn about Koko — and gorilla hearts and minds in general — as we review our vast video archive, which we have now fully digitized thanks to wonderful supporters like you.

Stay tuned for more Koko-love (every week) and feel free to send questions and comments by replying to these emails.
