See Koko engage with several different kinds of cameras over time.

The above video begins with Koko’s well-known self-portrait, an image she took herself (looking in the mirror) that later appeared on the cover of National Geographic.

In later footage, she examines and winds a disposable camera. Near the end, you will see two photographs that Koko took with a digital camera.

In both images, her hand partially covers the frame, a reminder that these photographs were made through Koko’s own physical interaction with the device.

What makes these moments especially compelling is that Koko was not only being photographed by others — she was also participating in the act of image-making herself.

These clips show her using a tool designed to record visual information and invite us to consider, in a very literal sense, the world from Koko’s perspective.
