Dear Friend,

In the above video, I spin Koko on a stool, and Koko responds with a smile.

We share a moment of laughter, and Koko gives me a gentle kiss on the cheek. Koko rubs her own cheek to mine, modifying the sign for “soft.” Then I laugh and sign “smart” on Koko — helping her sign it back to me.

This playful exchange offers a glimpse into the unique bond we shared — and how Koko used sign language not just to communicate, but to connect.

I believe all gorillas have the capacity to connect with us in profoundly meaningful ways.
