Dear Friend,
In the above video, we introduce you to two of our dedicated partners in Cameroon: Dr. Denis Ndeloh and Deh Nji Hermann. They are working with local communities to protect the rarest gorilla of allโ the Cross River gorilla.
There are 4 subspecies of gorillas in Africa, each with itโs own challenges:
โข Mountain gorillas (~1,000 left)
โข Eastern Lowland gorillas (~7,000 left)
โข Western Lowland gorillas (~100,000+ but severely threatened by humans)
โข Cross River gorillas (~300 left, the most endangered)
With so few left, the Cross River gorillas could vanish quickly without help. Thatโs why Denis and Deh are bringing three village communities together to stand with them, and combining 2 complementary approaches: gorilla population monitoring enabled by community participation and camera technology, and empathy building powered by the Koko Signs app.
If we succeed here, this same conservation through communication approach can help protect every gorilla. This is Kokoโs message in action: empathy can change the future.
With gratitude,

Dr. Penny Patterson
