Chief Philanthropy Officer (CPO)

The Gorilla Foundation is excited to announce our new Chief Philanthropy Officer, Joy Chesbrough. Joy’s passion for conservation, specifically for great apes and interspecies communication has been an important part of Joy’s life since childhood.

Professionally, Joy spent over 20 years as an executive nonprofit leader managing fundraising and marketing teams and departments. Prior to her work at The Gorilla Foundation, Joy worked for some of the world’s largest national and international nonprofit organizations on sophisticated campaigns and fundraising initiatives. She served in a senior executive role for MAP International, voted as one of CNN and Forbes top charities, and as a Senior Director at World Vision where she was part of a national team that launched the For Every Child campaign that raised $500 million to reach 10 million children worldwide. Joy was also the executive development director that worked with Scripps Health Foundation to build a premier Integrative Medicine Center in La Jolla, California and led all marketing and fundraising at the Parkinson’s Institute and Clinical Center, as their Chief Development Officer. Previously to that she led the entire Petsmart Charities philanthropy department as their National Director of Philanthropy where she was part of an executive team that launched Petsmart’s first national cause-marketing campaign called, People Saving Pets.

Additionally, Joy is a talented writer and has been published in San Diego Magazine. She was a panel speaker and presenter on the subject of philanthropy at Scripps 4th & 5th Annual Natural Supplement conference, Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine Health and Healing conference, The American Board of Integrative Holistic Medicine conference in San Diego, and at the Phoenix Business Journal’s 2012 Corporate Partnership Summit. Joy has also produced films and Television commercials and a stage production of “Red Devils” at the Hollywood Court Theater in Los Angeles.

Joy holds an M.A in Communication from Regent’s School of Cinematography and Television and an M.A. in Nonprofit Leadership and Management from the University of San Diego’s Caster School of Nonprofit Leadership. Joy’s spent the last ten years as a member of the Association for Fundraising Professionals (AFP) where she served for two years as their Chair of Corporate Partnerships. And she is a distinguished member of Worldwide Who’s Who International and was recently awarded, Professional of the Year by the agency in 2013.

Joy currently lives in Northern, California with her loveable French Bulldog Napoleon.
