Celebrate Koko’s Legacy
Koko changed the world with her gentle signs and powerful heart. This July, we honor what would have been her 54th birthday. Born as Hanabi-Ko—“Fireworks Child”—Koko became the voice of her species through Project Koko, the longest interspecies communication study in history.
This July 4th, we’re honoring Koko by protecting those who need our help most: the critically endangered Cross River Gorillas, with fewer than 300 remaining in the wild. Together, we can honor Koko with lasting impact. Every act of giving helps protect her endangered family.
Koko helped the world see gorillas in a new light. Through her ability to communicate with humans, she inspired a deeper sense of empathy, awareness, and action. This video honors her life and shows how her legacy is driving real conservation efforts to protect endangered gorillas and promote compassion across species.
