Conservation-through-Communication Projects

We advance gorilla conservation and humane care by fostering understanding, empathy, and respect for our closest relatives through these four integrated initiatives:

๐ŸŒฑย KokoKids

Conservation education outreach in Africa, with a focus on Cameroon and the critically endangered Cross River gorilla population, to inspire young people to protect gorillas and their habitats by changing attitudes toward hunting and deforestation.

๐Ÿžย KokoCares

Designing gorilla-centered sanctuaries that prioritize natural settings, autonomy, freedom from unwanted human intrusion, and opportunities for gorillas to transition to free-living when possible.

๐Ÿ“ฒย KokoApp

Ongoing development of theย Koko Signsย app, teaching Kokoโ€™s favorite signs through interactive, conversational videos. This empathy-building tool supports both KokoKids and KokoCares by promoting interspecies connection.

๐Ÿ“šย KokoArc

Digitizing, preserving, and analyzing 50 years of groundbreaking interspecies communication research with Koko, Michael, and Ndumeโ€”the only such study of its kind. Leveraging AI to summarize and unlock the linguistic and cognitive insights embedded in this rich multimedia archive, providing key knowledge that informs all our mission projects.
